A payload is the code that executes after exploitation. Stagers, single payloads, reverse shells, bind shells — each serves a different phase of an operation.

Understanding the design choices behind each type helps operators select the right tool for the environment. Most importantly, payloads must be obfuscated to evade static and dynamic analysis.
